Battle Angel Alita
I still have never finished this series, but I have memories of seeing the first couple Dark Horse versions of this book. I distinctly remember going into a book store and seeing this book and the image of Alita on the front cover struck a chord with me. It was around the time I had started to get into comics and anime. I had not seen a lot of anime and I noticed the style to be similar to the anime I had seen. It intrigued me, I had plenty of time to look through it so I began reading it right there in the bookstore.
I was hiding it though because, I knew that my parents would be unhappy with me looking at it. Something about it seemed off limits at the time. The violence and the sex appeal. I had to stop reading and just search through the book and look at the artwork. The stunning visuals of Yukito Kishiro still to this day is unmatched by other artist. This book simply blew me away and that night I thought about the book. I tried to remember the look and feel of it. I tried to imitate it in my own comics at the time.
Much later around the year 200 when I was in college, I came across copies of the graphic novels at the city library. At the time I was living in Columbus and I was making my own money. So my diet of anime was increased a little. The minute I saw this book in the library I had to get it. SO I checked it out, and consumed it. I love this book still to this day and would love to finish it someday. Anyhow these are some of the reasons I chose to draw her next.
This is my second time drawing Alita fanart. The first time I draw a picture of Alita and Gonzu.
I decided I would draw her in a more complicated pose and with her armor. The problem with this was I had a hard time finding very clear references so I had to kinda make some of it up. If I couldn’t get it design for design I was going to try and match it best I could.
Anyhow I’m fairly happy with how this turned out. I really like her face. The helmet took a couple tries to get it to where I approved of it.
